Belmont Neighborhood Taskforce

Seigle Avenue Presbyterian Church strongly supports the HOPE VI application.

Along with its sister organizations, the Seigle Avenue Preschool Cooperative, the Jacob’s Ladder Job Training Center, and Seigle Avenue Partners, we urge the City Council to stand with the Charlotte Housing Authority and commit the full financial support needed to win the grant.  We believe the HOPE VI plan offers the best chance to meet the needs of current residents, increase affordable housing, and set in motion the revitalization of Piedmont Court and the surrounding Belmont community.

Our Belmont Housing Taskforce spent months studying the issues, listening carefully to Piedmont Court residents, meeting often with CHA representatives, and striving to understand proposal specifics.  We find the following arguments most compelling:

  • Solid investment:  City funds may help generate more than one million dollars in increased city & county tax revenue annually, are leveraged 8 to 1 with other private and public investment, and will primarily be committed after other monies are invested.

  • Implements Belmont Plan:  The proposal enacts key elements of the already approved Belmont Plan, generates extensive infill near Uptown, and helps create wealth for 269 minority homeowners within Belmont.

  • Advances Affordable Housing:  The plan offers the opportunity of preserving/creating 340 affordable housing units at a cost of only $13,600 per unit – an excellent investment opportunity for Housing Trust dollars.  The plan also builds on the 100+ existing homeowners established by Habitat for Humanity in the Belmont Neighborhood.

  • Fills the Donut:  Revitalizing Belmont benefits the entire city, further enabling active revitalizations in adjacent neighborhoods (North Davidson, Plaza-Midwood, Elizabeth, & First Ward) and the Central Avenue commercial corridor.  Additionally, the plan eliminates concentrated poverty and related criminal activity.

We thank you for considering our concerns and your continuing efforts to improve our city.
