More about Habitat for Humanity:

Habitat Charlotte Website: http://www.habitatcharlotte.org

Founded on a Christian Ministry, Habitat for Humanity of Charlotte works in partnership with God and people from all walks of life to develop community with people in need by building and renovating homes, so that people can live and grow into all that God intended.

Some of Habitat's beliefs include:

1.  We are doing God's work and God's power is unlimited.  Through God, all things are possible.

2.  The Bible emphasizes God's special concern for the poor and calls us to share and to be responsible for the well being of ourselves and others.

3.  Adequate housing is a basic need.

4.  Homeownership is a helpful step in enhancing a higher level of independence in families and building a sense of community, accomplishment and pride in neighborhoods.

5.  Building community is as important as building homes.

6.  Involving families in building their own homes and others' homes is psychologically, spiritually, and practically sound.

7.  We must be responsive to the strengths, needs and concerns of existing and prospective Habitat neighborhoods.

History of Habitat

Habitat builds the lives of those families who become homeowners, volunteers and donors. It is a fulfilling partnership and a lasting contribution to our community.

Habitat for Humanity International was founded by Millard and Linda Fuller in 1976.   Habitat grew out of the Fuller's work at Koinonia Farms working and living with Clarence Jordan, a radical southern preacher.  Since then, we have expanded to over 1500 affiliates in the United States, while over 100.000 families worldwide are living in Habitat homes.  Overall, Habitat International has worked in more than 63 foreign countries.

Habitat for Humanity of Charlotte was founded in 1983 and has always been a leader among US affiliates.  In 2002 we will build our 500th house!  Habitat Charlotte is a sound non-profit organization with an experienced staff and more than 5,000 volunteers and donors working to build lives in our community.

Habitat for Humanity of Charlotte
A lot to build on

In our first 18 years, our volunteers and homeowners built an amazing 500 homes - homes that have changed the lives of 500 families and many more. That's because Habitat offers people a chance to own a home which they otherwise might never have. These families work hard building their own and other Habitat houses, and they're rewarded with a fine, affordable home and a low, interest-free mortgage. Moving from inadequate, often substandard housing into a well-built Habitat home gives family after family a fresh start.

Many others benefit from Habitat homes, too. The houses we build help transform whole neighborhoods by increasing community pride and reducing crime. As one long-time mail carrier told us, before Habitat built homes on his route, "Gun shots were common, but no more." And Habitat homes also affect the lives of the volunteers who build them. Some complete a single structure.

Many others work on house after house. All are fulfilled by the uniquely satisfying experience of helping others build a better life.

With one of the strongest programs in the nation, Habitat Charlotte has much to be proud of.  We were first in the country to:

  • Have a home constructed completely by youths
  • See existing Habitat homeowners raise the funds, and build a home for another homeowner
  • Blitz-build 22 homes in one week
  • Construct a home by an all woman crew
  • Construct a home in 24 hours
  • Build 100 homes
