Helping Empower Local People

In 1993, a group of Charlotte pastors (including Seigle's Charlie Summers) started an organizing process to bring congregations together across racial lines to build a broad-based organization that would have power to create positive change in our communities. Among the activities that H.E.L.P. has been involved in:

  • Conducted neighborhood audits that uncovered many items that were brought to the city and county for correction.

  • Conducted school audits and worked on school bond issues that brought attention to large inequities within our school system.

  • Signed up families in the N.C. Health Choice insurance program.

  • Conducted an audit of job training centers and developed a Better Job Strategy.

  • Conducted a Living Wage campaign that brought attention to the many Charlotteans who work for a paycheck that does not begin to pay the bills.
