Seigle Avenue Preschool Cooperative

In 1986, Seigle Avenue Presbyterian Church had about 60 regular worshippers on any given Sunday. This small but highly committed congregation, with help from Myers Park Presbyterian and the Junior League of Charlotte, opened the doors that year to a new program: the Seigle Avenue Preschool Cooperative. Serving the families of Piedmont Courts and Belmont, the Preschool’s vision has always been:

  • To prepare children to be successful in school and in life by

  • Providing a quality preschool program to 2, 3 and 4 year olds

  • Training parents to be teachers and advocates for their children

  • Tracking the progress of our graduates and their families and providing ongoing support to them.

Part-time teachers Brent Meyer and Ann Bradley enrolled 20 children that first fall.

See how we’ve grown! Now, 40 children are served by 11 staff: 3 lead teachers; 3 assistants; 1 cook; 1 (part time) bus driver; 1 Executive Director; 1 Parent Coordinator; and 1 Family Outreach Coordinator.  Seigle Avenue Preschool is now a 4 star-licensed childcare center and is working toward National Accreditation.  We are also very fortunate to have a collaborative partnership with CMS and provide the Bright Beginnings Pre-Kindergarten Program at our preschool.

Our services have grown as well:

  • We expanded outreach into the homes of our students to offer assistance to families when their preschoolers transition into public schools.

  • Our parents/caregivers continue to be involved in our program and their children’s education by committing 7 hours a month of volunteer time in our center as well as attending a weekly parent meeting that focuses on parenting skills.

  • We have extended our follow-up activities to gather data on the performance of our children as they progress through the elementary grades.

Our program continues to be successful because we are committed to serving our families, and our families reciprocate this commitment. The church’s early vision and constant support have helped us create and sustain a program that ministers to the needs of our neighbors!
